Exploring the World of Tomorrow
A Forum on the Future of Tourism in Flushing, Queens
The Expo will kick off on Friday, June 15, 10am, at the Sheraton LaGuardia East Hotel, with a keynote address by Marty Markowitz, former Borough President and vice president of borough promotion and engagement at NYC & Co., a forum on “Exploring the World of Tomorrow: The Future of Tourism in Flushing, Queens,” moderated by Rob MacKay of the Queens Tourism Council, and a showcase of local businesses and cultural venues as well as government agencies available to help small business owners.
Flushing, Queens, is the most diverse and dynamic community in the United States. People from around the world have made themselves home here, sparking unparelleled growth and vitality—and in the process, creating the fourth largest commercial district in New York, the biggest intermodal transportation hub outside of Times Square, a small business community that generates $1.5 billion in annual sales, world-class restaurants and cultural venues you cannot find anywhere else, and rents exceeding midtown Manhattan. Flushing Library has the highest circulation of any library branch in America; Flushing's Lunar New Year Parade regularly exceeds 10,000 people; and, in the last recession, when Wall Street was pulling down our nation, the small business owners of Flushing added jobs, expanded economic activity, and generated taxes. Don't look for the Real New York in the Empire State Building or the Statue of Liberty—look for the Real New York right here in Flushing, where people from around the world struggle to overcome immense challenges and ultimately succeed in transforming not only themselves, but New York City and America itself.
Much of the growth and prosperity in Flushing happened despite official indifference, media stereotypes, and socio-economic marginalization. The speakers in this forum will help shine a light on the ways Flushing can better promote and uplift the unique stories of the amazing people and places that make our community so special. Moderated by Rob MacKay of the Queens Tourism Council, our speakers include: Helen You, Chef & Owner of Dumpling Galaxy; Joshua Schneps, Chief Executive Officer of Schneps Communications; Matt Levy of Levy’s Unique NY; Konstantinos Koll of Brandtree Media; and, Shweta Parmar of Gutsier Living.
The “Flushing’s World Fair” expo is funded by the Neighborhood 360° Program, which was created by the New York City Department of Small Business Services to identify, develop, and launch commercial revitalization projects in partnership with local stakeholders. Through this program, the Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce and AAFE launched a three-year district marketing campaign called Flushing Fantastic. The Expo celebrates the end of the first year of Flushing Fantastic.
