Consecrated on July 4, 1977 and formally known as Šri Mahã Vallabha Ganapati Devasthãnam, the Ganesh Temple is the first Hindu Temple in North America built with black granite imported from India. Ganesh—the elephant-headed deva revered as a remover of obstacles— presides over the temple and is located at its center. Almost as magnificent and as the temple itself are the dosai—crispy rice and lentil flour crepes—served at the Temple Canteen, which has its roots in the preparation of naivedyam, or foods to be offered to the gods. These include one of Ganesh’s favorite sweets the golden orbs known as laddoo.

The “Flushing’s World Fair” expo is funded by the Neighborhood 360° Program, which was created by the New York City Department of Small Business Services to identify, develop, and launch commercial revitalization projects in partnership with local stakeholders. Through this program, the Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce and AAFE launched a three-year district marketing campaign called Flushing Fantastic. The Expo celebrates the end of the first year of Flushing Fantastic.
